After the departure of the 305th, at the end of the war...
Chelveston was relinquished to the care of 25 R.A.F. maintenance...

At the beginning of 1952..  the 817th Engineers, an American unit...
arrived, to begin reconstruction of a new airfield on the Chelveston site....

Nearing completion...  November 7th 1955....
According to the perceived innovations at the time, a single, almost two miles long...
"fifty yard wide runway" was laid...  with the taxiing track running parallel...

Your top picture of the runway under construction shows the asphalt plant at the end of the runway. The crane on the right is where the cement plant was located. I helped set them both up....
Seems like yesterday..  This was 1953 when they were put in place....   Frank Melvin...
